How to Look Good without Spending a lot of Money

This is a story of a fashionista.

While Emmy was happy with nonprofit work, her love was always fashion. Once she found a stable job, she started investing in her professional wardrobe, even when struggling financially, and was still able to look fashionable and professional.

Her advice is:

“You don’t have to spend a lot of money to look good. I don’t buy expensive stuff. I don’t like expensive purses. It’s my personality.”

Emmy bought her own clothes when she was in high school and over time became a smarter shopper. She continues to follow fashion today and has the creative ability to match color. If you gave her ten pieces of basic clothing [not necessarily brand names], she could mix and match them to create a capsule wardrobe. Emmy was known as a fashionista to her peers. She was well dressed and utilized clothes purchased many years previously. She weighed about the same over the years — plus or minus ten to fifteen pounds difference, so all her clothes would still fit. In fact, at our interview, Emmy was wearing a pair of black capri pants that were thirty years old. She had the money to buy a new pair but didn’t find anything she liked; instead, she combed through her closet and recreated the desired outfit.

Emmy’s personal mantra is:

“I do not want to spend too much money on expensive clothes and instead invest in good classic clothes with a little bit of fashion. I do not waste money on expensive cars and clothing.”

Ms. Fashionista worked her entire life, mostly for non-profit organizations. She was able to retire debt-free at the age of sixty, living off her savings. Her story proves that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to be chic.
